This website aims to provide an easily accessible list of those Greek Australians who served in the Australian Military Forces in World War Two. This is a dynamic website in the sense that it is not envisaged to be ever ‘finished’. Data will be continually added as feedback comes in from the Greek Australian community. This is an important element to enable accurate and reliable information and ensuring that the history presented is both truthful and respectful

The Greek migrant inflow which gathered steam as the century wore on was an important factor in creating the multi-cultural Australia that we have today. The Greek diaspora was everywhere evident. From major cities to regional centres and small country towns.

The fact that the Greek community in Australia flocked to the colours with vigour during the war suggests a much closer affinity to the community than is sometimes presented. Whilst one can always find examples of discrimination and prejudice, I would suggest that on the whole the Greek migrants found the Australian population welcoming and accepting once they started to live and work together. This led the way to the acceptance of the great post war migrant intakes of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Australian culture today has been formed by incorporating elements of all the diverse cultural traditions that have found a home here. It has been an evolving process with no sign of stopping. In this sense Australia, despite the occasional hiccup, can proudly stand tall as a world leader in how a society can live in peace amongst the different ethnic and cultural traditions of its inhabitants.
